Box Score For the first time this season, the Lancaster Bible women's soccer team passed a tough non-conference test and it couldn't have come at a better time.Â
Freshman
Kirsten Webster scored with 14:13 to play to help Lancaster Bible turn back Goucher, 2-1 in Baltimore, Md. The Chargers' first two tests of the season did not go well as they lost Alvernia, 4-0 and Swarthmore, 6-0. On Tuesday however, the Chargers opened the scoring and played with confidence throughout the 90 minutes.
Junior
Monica Horning gave LBC a 1-0 lead at the 29:09 mark when she blasted a shot from just outside the box. The goal was Horning's ninth goal of the year, but LBC's lead was short-lived as Goucher's Gaby Davis scored 2:16 later to tie the game at 1-1.
The game remained tied through halftime as the Chargers fought off scoring chances by the Gophers and managed to earn a few chances of their own. LBC finally struck when Webster found the ball off of a
Sarah Heilenman free kick and shot it into the back of the net.Â
Goucher had a few shots in the game's final minutes, but the Chargers'
Kaitlyn Scheuing turned them all away as LBC improved to 9-3 overall.Â
"We played as a unit against a very good attack," Chargers Head Coach
Ken Craul said. "It looks like we are being more accountable with the area that we are playing in and understanding our responsibilities."
The Gophers (4-7-1) outshot the Chargers, 14-7, including a 10-3 edge in the second half. The Chargers did not record a corner kick, while Goucher attempted five.Â
Scheuing finished with three saves for the Chargers who allowed their first goal since losing to Penn St. Berks, 2-1 on Sept. 23. Tuesday was LBC's first win in which they did not shut its opponent out.Â
The Chargers are now 3-4 all-time against the Gophers and rebounded from last season's 2-0 loss in Baltimore.Â
LBC returns to conference play on Thursday when they host Penn St. Abington at 4 p.m. Both teams enter the game with 18 points, which is tied for second place. The Chargers beat Penn St. Abington, 2-1 last season.Â
