Box Score The 2013 Lancaster Bible women's volleyball season came to an end on Tuesday night as the Chargers were swept by Penn St. Berks, 3-0 in Reading, Pa. The NEAC Quarterfinal victory sends the Nittany Lions into the NEAC Semifinals which will take place this weekend at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.
On Tuesday, the Chargers lost, 25-22, 25-9, 25-18 and managed only 20 kills against 16 errors. Sophomore
Joanna Butala led the Chargers, with six kills and also led the squad in digs with 13. Sophomore
Rachel Olson and junior
Katie Coomber each added four kills and 10 digs. The four kills for Coomber give her 401 for the season as she becomes just the fourth player in program history to record 400 kills in a season, joining
Lauren Heliger,
Lauren Daniels and Peggy Compton.Â
Olson also enters the LBC record books as she becomes just the second player in program history to record at least 500 digs in a season as she finished with a team-high 507 this season. Only Heliger (618) has recorded more in a single season.
The Nittany Lions (17-12) were led by NEAC Rookie of the Year, Sophia Zhang who had 15 kills, while NEAC Defensive Player of the Year, Morgan Butterbaugh had 26 digs.
The loss was LBC's third to Penn St. Berks this season, each of them coming by the same, 3-0 score. LBC ends the season with a 14-25 record.
"We have nothing to be ashamed of and played true to who we are," Chargers Head Coach
Lauren Bewley said.
The 2013 volleyball team should remain intact for the 2014 season as there were no seniors on this year's squad. With a solid influx of recruits, the Chargers will look to make the NEAC playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.
