Chargers' Run Ends in NEAC Semifinals

Box Score For a team that scored 69 goals this season, the Lancaster Bible women's soccer team never seemed to be able to get the big goal when they needed it. In Saturday's North Eastern Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Semifinal, the Chargers once again got burned by a late-game goal after they had several chances to take control of the game.

Penn St. Abington's Brigitta Good scored off a corner kick with 5:08 to play to send the Nittany Lions into Sunday's NEAC Final, while the Chargers will be left to think about what could have been.

The game was a back and forth affair in which both teams had plenty of chances, but at the same time, there were long periods where play took place mainly in the midfield. The Chargers (14-8) began to control much of the play midway through the second half, before having to defend against a flurry of chances by the Nittany Lions in the final five minutes of the first half.

LBC held a 10-3 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks in the first half, yet the game remained scoreless. The Chargers then hit the crossbar early in the second half, but the play began to be much more 50-50 after that as the Nittany Lions began clawing their way back into the game.

Both teams had solid chances midway through the second half, especially the Chargers when sophomore Bethany Stein broke down the right-hand side and just missed chipping the ball overtop of Nittany Lion goalkeeper Alyssa Kaye who was sliding out on the play.

After earning a corner kick with just over five minutes to play, the Nittany Lions played the ball into the box where Good was waiting and headed the ball off of the right-hand post and into the back of the net. The Chargers did not threaten in the final minutes remaining and for the first time since joining the NEAC in 2011, will not be one of the two teams in the NEAC Final.

"It's a tough loss," Chargers Head Coach Ken Craul said. "I thought our effort was good and we played for today. There wasn't a lot left in the team's tank after the game. Abington is tough because they just don't give up many goals. We had some opportunities throughout the game, but just didn't convert."

Despite some up-and-down play towards the end of the season, Craul said he considered the season to be a success because the team stayed committed and played well in its final two games.

"I think these past two games we really showed up and made a commitment to playing well as a team," Craul said. "I think we can learn from this and realize that type of urgency needs to be present all season long."

The entire team can use it as a learning experience for next season because they will all be eligible to return, something Craul is excited for.

"We were a young team this season and now that we have hopefully learned a few things, we can come back next season with a few more added parts and get back to where we want to be," Craul said.

Notes:
-The Chargers finished one win short of having 15 for the fourth consecutive season.

-LBC's 69 goals scored are the fourth most in program history.

-Freshman Alyssa Wesner's 43 points are tied for the fifth most in program history and the most ever for a freshman.

-For the second time in program history (2004 being the other) the Chargers had four players score double digit goals (Wesner, Monica Horning, Bethany Stein, Brooke Cullum).
