Just like last season, the Lancaster Bible women's volleyball team has opened the season, 0-3 thanks to three straight losses to their geographical rivals. Franklin & Marshall and Penn St. Berks swept matches from the Chargers on Saturday as LBC hosted the final four matches of the Crosstown Crossover.
In the opening match, the Diplomats height and power proved to be too much for the Chargers as they won, 25-15, 25-12, 25-17. Emily Olson had four kills, while Joanna Butala had a team-high seven digs. Kelsey Michenko led F&M with 10 kills and five blocks. The Chargers had just two blocks, while the Dips had 12.
In the second match, the Chargers played better, but still fell to the Nittany Lions, 25-22, 25-16, 25-18. The match was a non-conference matchup for the two teams who are each part of the NEAC Conference. The conference match between the two teams will take place on Oct. 4 in Reading, Pa.
Four LBC players had six kills against the Nittany Lions, including Rachel Olson who added 24 digs. Katie Coomber added 13 digs and five assists to her six kills, while Hanna Metzler had four kills and 19 assists.
"I think because of our youth, we are still looking for that one person who is going to take over and lead our team," Chargers Head Coach Lauren Bewley said. "Everyone is willing to learn however and I thought we did OK with some of the adjustments we made during the match."
Despite the quality of the opponents the Chargers played the past two days, Bewley said she doesn't want the team to simply chalk up the losses to playing teams that are better than them.Â
"I realize these are good teams, but I don't want us to settle with these results," Bewley said. "Our expectations for ourselves need to rise. We need to work on our desire to win a little bit."
The Chargers will get that chance on Wednesday when they travel to Doylestown, Pa. to face Delaware Valley and Washington in a tri-match that begins at 4 p.m.
