Late Goal Stuns Chargers

Box Score There are 90 minutes in a soccer game, or 5,400 seconds. After 5,390 seconds of Monday's NEAC showdown between Penn St. Berks and Lancaster Bible, it appeared the game was headed towards overtime with the score knotted at 1-1.

One throw-in, touch pass and shot later, the clock was stopped. It read 1.9 seconds remaining; Penn St. Berks 2, Lancaster Bible 1. Simone Stewart's goal, her second of the game, with 1.9 seconds left gave the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead which they obviously held on to and they stunned the Chargers at Charger field.

Penn St. Berks owned the first half as they not only had several offensive chances, but held possession of the ball in Lancaster Bible's end for long stretches of time. Their pressure was rewarded at the 29:43 mark when Stewart collected a rebound and fired a shot into the left-hand side of the net past Chargers' goalkeeper Kaitlyn Scheuing.

The second half started much of the same way as Penn St. Berks continued to get quality offensive chances. Scheuing, who was named NEAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week prior to the game, bailed LBC out a few times and the Nittany Lions missed the net several times as well.

The Chargers (5-3, 3-1 NEAC) finally got the break they were looking for when Evelyn Stuaffer slid a pass over to Monica Horning on the right wing and Horning blasted home her sixth goal of the season that Berks' goalkeeper Savannah Cramer got a piece of before it found the back of the net.

The teams played back-and-forth for the final 20 minutes before the Nittany Lions made one more run up the field with under 30 seconds to play. After working their way up to the Chargers half of the field, Penn St. Berks had one final opportunity that began with a throw-in with about 10 seconds to play. Dana Sarcinello, who had several scoring chances of her own during the game, touched a pass over to Stewart who found herself with room to work with around the 18-yard mark. Stewart fired a shot to the left-hand side of the net that was out of the reach of Scheuing. The stunned crowd looked on in disbelief as the Nittany Lions celebrated their surprising victory.

"It's easy to point out that last play," Chargers Head Coach Ken Craul said, "However I'm more concerned with what happened in the previous 89:58 which is what setup that final goal."

Craul, who was pleased with parts of LBC's game, said the Chargers still need to play better as a united team.

"We need to understand and execute our responsibilities on the field, especially on the defensive end of things," Craul said. "In the midfield, it took us too long to figure out that we needed to connect more passes on the ground, rather than through the air. I think we are still waiting for our team to play as a single unit against a good team."

Craul commended Scheuing who continues to play well for LBC in her first season with the Chargers.

"She has been a big plus all season long," Craul said. "She brings a consistent effort every single game."

When asked if it was good or bad that the Chargers had off until Saturday after losing the way they did, Craul said it probably was, even though the Chargers will be itching to rebound from the loss.

"Anytime you can have days off during the season, it's probably good," Craul said. "We'll take Tuesday to look back at today and then start preparing for St. Elizabeth on Wednesday."

The Chargers will host St. Elizabeth on Saturday at 1 p.m. as LBC celebrates Homecoming. The game is part of a tripleheader as the women's volleyball team will host Eastern Mennonite at 11 a.m. and the men's soccer team will face Widener at 3 p.m.

Notes:
-As was noted above, Scheuing became LBC's first NEAC Player of the Week for 2013-14 as she was named NEAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for her two shutouts last week. She has five shutouts already this season.

-While no research was done since the game ended, Stewart's goal is more than likely one of the latest game-winning goals ever scored in NCAA history.

-Penn St. Berks defeated Lancaster Bible, 2-1 in the regular season last year, before the Chargers earned redemption in the NEAC Final by beating the Nittany Lions, 2-0.
