Box Score It's strange that the Lancaster Bible women's volleyball team is just a little over a third into its regular season. Through 14 matches, the Chargers have had the ups and downs of a full season and yet there are still 24 matches remaining before a possible NEAC playoff run.Â
Tuesday's match against Catholic had those same ups and downs rolled into one match as the Chargers played poorly for two sets and inspired for two sets as they lost, 3-1 at Horst Athletic Center. The Cardinals won, 25-15, 25-17, 21-25, 25-17 and improved to 4-0 all-time against LBC.
LBC's
Rachel Olson had 13 kills and nine digs, while fellow sophomore
Hannah Metzler added six kills, 18 digs and 30 assists.
Joanna Butala and
Katie Coomber each had nine kills and
Grace Scheuerman had 10 digs.Â
After Catholic ran away with the first two sets, the Chargers battled back to take third and made a late run at the fourth set as well. LBC Head Coach
Lauren Bewley said she wants the team to not only play a full match with the same passion from the third and fourth sets, but realize that they can beat an opponent like Catholic.
"I don't think we understand our ability yet," Bewley said. "I think we were surprised we won the third set and I think if we had believed we could win for the entire match, bigger things could have happened."
Bewley said she thinks the Chargers are improving and will continue to get better as long as they remain committed mentally and start playing to their potential.
"We need to continue our mental maturity," Bewley said. "I think the third set tonight shows that we have some potential and we should be able to play at the level for entire matches rather than just having one or two highlights each match."
The Chargers will face another tough test on Thursday as they take on Cairn and Valley Forge Christian in a NCCAA East Region tri-match to be held at Horst Athletic Center. Home court advantage will be on the line in the opening match against the Highlanders. The winner of that match will host the NCCAA East Region playoffs late in November.Â
LBC's match with Cairn is slated to begin at 4 p.m., while the Highlanders and Patriots will face one another at 6 p.m. LBC will then host the Patriots 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Cairn/Valley Forge Christian match.
