Box Score 2 The Lancaster Bible women's volleyball team played just about as poorly as they can against a really good opponent and paid for it on Thursday evening. Fortunately, they had another match and while it didn't make up for the egg they laid earlier in the evening, the total team effort did leave the Chargers smiling afterward.
Cairn, LBC's first opponent, jumped all over the Chargers as they rolled to a three-set sweep, 25-17, 25-15, 25-7. A combination of Cairn's solid hitting (42 kills against just 11 errors) and the Chargers frequent errors led to the final set in which the Chargers earned a season-low seven points. It marked the first time since last year's 2012 NEAC Semifinals the Chargers were held to single digits.Â
Junior
Katie Coomber had a team-high nine kills, while
Hannah Metzler added nine digs.
"We played poorly, there's really no other way to put that," Chargers Head Coach
Lauren Bewley said. "Not to take anything away from Cairn, because they played well, but we didn't do anything right."
The Chargers had time to think about their performance for a while as Cairn defeated Valley Forge Christian, 3-0 in the evening's second match. The rest and reflection must've done something positive for LBC, because they came out a different team in their second match.
LBC rolled Valley Forge Christian, sweeping them, 25-7, 25-21, 25-9 in a match that every member of the Chargers had a hand in.
Aubrey Folger,
Joanna Butala,
Whitney Longacre and Coomber each had five kills, while
Grace Scheuerman had four kills and three digs. Junior
Emily Timberlake added 12 assists and
Rachel Laubach had a kill and three digs.
"It was nice to see everyone have a hand in the win," Bewley said.
The top two seeds for the NCCAA East Region playoffs are now set as the Highlanders will be the host based upon their perfect 3-0 record. LBC will be the second seed as per their 2-1 record. The Patriots will play Baptist Bible next week to determine the third and fourth seeds.Â
The Chargers are back in action on Saturday when they will host Eastern Mennonite at 11 a.m. The match is part of LBC's Homecoming festivities as the women's soccer team will play at 1 p.m. followed by the men's soccer team at 3 p.m. LBC has not played a Homecoming Match since 2009 when they lost to Baptist Bible, 3-2.
