Box Score It wasn't the crushing blow that the goal with 1.9 seconds to play provided last year for the Lancaster Bible women's soccer team, but Penn St. Berks certainly does have some late game magic when it comes to play the Chargers. Ellie McKinstry's third goal of the game came with 5:25 to play and broke a 3-3 tie as the Nittany Lions defeated Lancaster Bible, 4-3 in Reading, Pa. on Monday evening.Â
Last season when the Nittany Lions broke a 1-1 tie with 1.9 seconds to play, the goal seemed to hang over the Chargers for much of the season. Monday's loss came in a game in which the Chargers played toe-to-toe with the two-time defending NEAC Regular Season Champions and actually held a 3-2 halftime lead. After going down 1-0, the Chargers scored twice in 3:18 as
Monica Lambertson and
Emily Beltran both netted goals off of passes from
Bethany Stein. Lambertson's goal was her sixth of the season, while Beltran's goal was her fourth of the season.
The Nittany Lions (5-1, 4-0 NEAC) tied the contest at the 36:17 mark, but once again Lancaster Bible answered the call and Stein scored her seventh goal of the year to give the Chargers a 3-2 advantage they would hold through halftime. Penn St. Berks, a team that scores goals in bunches, specifically in the second half, showed why they had scored 30 goals in five games this season as they tied the game just over six minutes into the second half.Â
The game remained tied until McKinstry gathered her own rebound with just under six minutes to play and gave the Nittany Lions a lead they would not relinquish.
Despite leading, 3-2 at halftime, the Chargers were actually outshot 15-8 in the opening period and Lancaster Bible Head Coach
Ken Craul actually thought the Chargers played better in the second half.
"We played much stronger soccer in the second half," Craul said. "I know that is strange because we didn't score in that half and scored three times in the first, but we had much better possession and positioning in the second half. We still have things to work on and overall I think we played pretty well as a team. We've got to move on to the weekend and keep getting better."
Stein, who had 11 goals as freshman and 12 goals last season, has a four-game goal scoring streak as her seven goals lead the team. Fellow junior
Kaitlyn Scheuing made 11 saves for the Chargers who lost to Penn St. Berks in the regular season for the third straight year.Â
The Nittany Lions held a 29-21 advantage in shots, while the Chargers (4-2, 2-1 NEAC) held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.Â
Lancaster Bible is back in action on Friday when they host Wilson at 4 p.m. and will then host Gallaudet at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to be played at Charger Field.
