Chargers Sweep Penn St. Harrisburg

The Lancaster Bible College baseball team showed two polar opposite ways of how to win a baseball game in their home opening doubleheader against Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday.

After crushing the Nittany Lions, 7-0 in the opener thanks to a complete game from Patrick Hart, the Chargers won game two, 7-6 in eight innings, coming back from a 6-0 deficit. Micah McClay drove in BJ Boosz in the bottom of the 8th to give LBC (7-5) the victory, their 7th in a row.

Hart was masterful in the opening game. He gave up just two hits after the first inning and did not allow a runner past second base for the entire game. Hart said he did a lot of walking between innings to keep himself warm on a cold March day.

"I walked around the bench area and tried to stay as warm as possible in between innings," Hart said. "It was easy to stay warm on the mound, but my job was made easier having such a great catcher behind the plate."

That catcher was Jarrod Bergey. Hart said he and Bergey had developed a very good relationship since the season started.

"I think Jarrod gets me some calls because he develops a good relationship with the umpire throughout the game," Hart said. "He and I seem to be on the same page all of the time and it is easy to relax out there when he is calling such a good game."

Hart struck out five, upping his total to 16 on the year, second behind Richard Westerlund, who has 17.

The Chargers had just three hits in game one, but used walks and two of those three hits in the bottom of the fourth to open up a 6-0 lead. After McClay and Josh Chamberlin walked, Joel Butala singled, loading the bases. John Smith IV walked, scoring McClay, followed by a single from Sean Westerlund which scored Chamberlin, increasing LBC's lead to 4-0. Another walk and a fielder's choice by Frank DiFilippo gave LBC a commanding 6-0 lead.

Hart walked a batter in the seventh, but got Penn State Harrisburg's Justin Zitsch to watch strike three go by and earn his second win of the season.

"Hart was lights out in game one," Chargers' Head Coach T.J. Horn said. "That is by far the best he has pitched all season."

Game two went nothing like game one for LBC. Chargers' starter Richard Westerlund ran into trouble right away in the first, walking leadoff hitter Tyler Houseal. Houseal would eventually score on a passed ball, while the Nittany Lions took advantage of two LBC errors to score two more runs in the first to take a quick 3-0 lead.

After getting the first batter out in the top of the second, Westerlund hit a batter and walked two more. He was pulled and set the stage for Justin Long. A passed ball and a single increased the lead to 6-0, but Long got out of the inning and would allow just two more hits the entire game.

The Chargers answered back right away in the bottom of the second, loading the bases for catcher Rob Kumher. Kumher came into the game, 0-for-14 from the plate, but his first collegiate hit helped turn the momentum for LBC.

Kumher roped a double and emptied the bases for LBC, cutting the Nittany Lions' lead in half at 6-3.

"I was just trying to put a solid swing on the ball and I was able to do that," Kumer said of his double. "It's been frustrating for sure, but I have been trying to stay positive and keep plugging away."

Kumher advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored a few pitches later on a passed ball to make it 6-4 Penn State Harrisburg.

The score remained that way as Long continued to mow down hitters, while LBC's bats went cold as well.

Back-to-back doubles by DiFilippo and Kody Godsey cut the deficit to one. After LBC loaded the bases, Kumher again came to the plate with the bases loaded, this time with one out and the Chargers trailing by one.

He didn't even have to take the bat of his shoulder to be a hero again.

Kumher was hit in the abdomen and trotted to first as McClay scored the tying run. Smith struck out and Sean Westerlund grounded into a fielder's choice to send the game to extra innings.

Boosz led off the bottom half of the eighth with a walk and after DiFilippo lined out, Hart, who had come in to run for Godsey in the seventh, also walked. That set the stage for McClay who singled to right field and scored Boosz to win the game.

"Game two was an exciting win, but certainly we would love to be ahead 6-0 in the second rather than down 6-0, but I'm proud of the way we battled through," Horn said.

Horn credited Kumher's 3-for-3, four RBI day, to him being more comfortable at the plate.

"He went back to an old stance and looked much more relaxed up there today," Horn said. "He obviously had some big at-bats for us today."

Godsey also had three hits for LBC in game two, giving him 12 for the year.

Up next for LBC is Penn State Abington. The two teams will face off on Monday in Media, Pa. at 12 p.m.
