Baseball Falls To Crown College In Spring Break Opener

How It Happened
The Lancaster Bible baseball team dropped their opening game in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, falling to Crown College by a score of 14-7 on Friday, March 11.

The Chargers (3-3 Overall) fell behind early, allowing three runs in the bottom of the first inning. LBC looked to respond in the second inning. After Ethan Varricchione reached on an error and eventually stole third base, Kaden Hunt hit a hard ground ball to the short stop, plating the Chargers first run of the game. Crown College (7-4 Overall) responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning making the score 4-1. LBC started a rally with two outs in the top of the third inning. Jaden Pinkney sliced a single into center field and then Blake Greenly worked a walk to put a pair of runners on base. Tyler Cunningham launched a single into center field, scoring Pinkney and bringing LBC back within two runs.

Crown College slowed down the Chargers offense, not allowing a run over the next three innings while slowly building a 9-2 lead. The Chargers tried to get back into the game in the top of the seventh inning. Mark Cullins sparked the offense, hitting a single into center field. Brian Coburn slammed a triple down the right field line, allowing Cullins to score easily from first. After Pinkney was hit by a pitch and Greenly walked to load the bases, Cunningham delivered a double into left field, plating two more runs. Adam Naylor tacked on another run grounding out to second base, allowing Greenly to score, cutting the Storm's lead down to three. The Chargers would not be able to get any closer, eventually falling by a score of 14-7.

Inside the Numbers
- The Chargers were led by Tyler Cunningham, who went 2-4 with a double, driving in three RBIs
- Brian Coburn went 2-4 with an RBI triple in the seventh inning
- Jaden Pinkney was also 2-4 with an RBI
- James Toney, Harrison Madagan and Mark Cullins each registered a hit
- Blake Greenly worked three walks, scoring once

On the Mound
- Owen Shimmel pitched 5.0 innings, allowing six runs on six hits while recording nine strikeouts
- Harrison Hobdy pitched 1.0 innings allowing three runs on two hits
- Colin Brubaker also pitched 1.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits
- Trevor High pitched 0.2 allowing four runs on three hits                                                                                                                                                                                      

Who's Next
The baseball team will continue action on their spring break trip, taking on Fredonia St. and Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, March 12.
