Box Score The Lancaster Bible women's lacrosse braved the elements on Monday afternoon in Lancaster County and cracked the win column for the first time this season, defeating Rosemont, 11-9 at Charger Field.
Chargers' senior
Whitney Heise led all scorers with seven goals, while
Danielle Good added two goals for the Chargers.
Ky-Leigh Hallman and
Ellie Hoover also scored for LBC who improved to 1-3 this season. Freshman goalie
Cheyenne Benson made five saves for her first collegiate victory.
Brittany Fuller led the Ravens with five goals as Rosemont fell to 0-3 this season.
The teams battled back and forth through sleet and snow in the first half as LBC took a 6-4 lead into halftime. Chargers' Head Coach
Zach Freeman thought the team took a little too long to get going in the first half, but played well once they found their rhythm.
"We were sluggish early in the first half and thought we would just come out and score whenever we wanted to," Freeman said. "I think once we realized we were in for a fight, the ladies finally woke up and began playing much better."
The game continued the same way in the second half as the teams traded goals, but Heise scored two quick goals with just over 20 minutes to play to give LBC a 10-6 lead. Rosemont responded over the next 10 minutes however and cut the deficit to 10-9 on Fuller's fifth of the game.
Heise restored LBC's two-goal lead two minutes later and with just under 10 minutes to go, a Rosemont player slipped on the snowy grass and the officials gathered together and called the game due to poor field conditions.
"It's unfortunate the way the game ended," Freeman said. "Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we were able to get the win, but both teams battled hard and through the snow the whole game, it just felt like we were short-changing the ladies. It's the officials' call thought and safety was certainly becoming an issue, as well as simply seeing the ball at times."
Despite the snow and the slow start, Freeman was happy with the team's process over the past two games.
"Saturday and today, we have really moved the ball up the field well," Freeman said. "We are trusting one another and realizing just how important it is to be able to pass and move without the ball."
The Chargers will look to make it two straight on Saturday when they host Lycoming at 1 p.m.
Notes:
-LBC's last two wins have come against Rosemont as the Chargers ended last season with a win over the Ravens.
-Each LBC player wore a red and yellow ribbon in their hair and on their shoelaces to pay tribute to the Seton Hill women's lacrosse team who tragically lost their head coach on Saturday when their bus crashed on the way to play Millersville University in Lancaster County.
