Women's Volleyball Wins Home Opener

Defeats Penn State-Brandywine 3-0

Lancaster Bible College Women's Volleyball Head Coach Lauren Mable wanted more energy from her team coming off a loss Tuesday at Gettysburg. Thursday night at Horst Athletic Center against Penn State-Brandywine, she got what she wanted - from her team and the Charger faithful.

The Chargers (1-1) breezed past the Nittany Lions (0-1) 25-16, 25-13, 25-20 to win their 2009 home opener in front of a loud home crowd.

"I thought there was great team energy on the floor," Mable said. "There was a lot of united play."

Sophomore Brittney Becker led the way with nine assists, four kills and seven aces. Her fellow sophomore Elissa Hunsberger added 12 assists and five kills. Senior Lauren Robertson added a team-high eight kills.

"Brittney served very well tonight," Assistant Coach Ben Bewley said. "She was key for us."

Mable was pleased with the way the Chargers fought for everything they got during the match.

"I think we earned a lot of our points," Mable said. "They made some errors here and there, but overall I think we earned the win tonight."

Penn-State Brandywine was led by Kate Cowan who had 10 assists and Carolyn Cohen who had four kills.

After Tuesday's loss against the Bullets, Mable asked her team to refocus on their goals for the season and the team had one of its best practices thus far.

"We had a great practice on Wednesday and tonight that showed because we executed so well," Mable said.

LBC returns to action this Saturday when they participate in the Crimson Eagle Classic at Philadelphia Biblical University. The Chargers will take on Farmingdale State College at 8:30 a.m. and Stevenson University at 12:30 p.m. How they fare in those matches will determine the rest of the tournament schedule.
