Chargers Drop Two in New York

Heading north to New York for two games on Friday and Saturday, the Lancaster Bible College women's lacrosse team was looking to not only play well, but also crack the win column for the first time. And while there were spurts of good play, the Chargers left New York, still winless.

Friday, March 30:
Keuka 18, Lancaster Bible 5

The Chargers frustrated the Storm in the early going as the game was tied through the first eight minutes. Keuka however, quickly found their offense and scored eight goals in the remaining 22 minutes of the first half, while the Chargers went scoreless.

"Everything we did right in the first 10 minutes or so, we completely forgot the final 20 minutes of the first half," Chargers' Head Coach Zach Freeman said. "Keuka stepped up and played well, but we didn't do a whole lot to stop them."

Rebekah Weidel scored three goals, all in the second half, while Whitney Heise and Akasha Kapp also scored for the Chargers.

"Offensively we had some strong play at times, but we are relying too much on certain players too often and we need to get away from that," Freeman said. "The ladies want it, they want to improve, we just need to be more consistent."

Saturday, March 31:
Wells 21, Lancaster Bible 14

A couple of changes to shake things up enabled the Chargers to score a season-high 14 goals, but it was not enough as LBC could not overcome a slow start and lost by seven, 21-14. Down 12-6 at halftime, the Chargers cut the deficit to 19-14 late in the second half, but ran out of time. Heise led LBC with five goals, while Danielle Good, Ellie Hoover and Weidel each had two goals. Becky Meyer, playing the field instead of goalie, scored her first collegiate goal, as did Kyleigh Worrell

Nicole Valinteno, playing goalie for the first time since the 2010 season, made eight saves for LBC (0-8). Also in the lineup for the first time since 2010 was senior Danielle Musselman who played over 50 minutes for the Chargers.

"The first 25 minutes were rough, but the last 35 minutes, we were right there with them," Freeman said. "We are still having trouble starting games well. For some reason, we just can't seem to avoid these five to ten minute lulls where we just don't play very well."

Freeman was happy however with the way the team played in the second half.

"It was great to see some of the ladies get their first goals," Freeman said. "They've been working really hard and it was nice to see them get rewarded. As much as we depended on Heise and Weidel on Friday, it was great to see everyone get into the swing of things on Saturday."

The Chargers next chance to crack the win column will be Tuesday when they take on Immaculata at 4 p.m.
