Chargers Drop Heartbreaker in Double Overtime

Entering Wednesday's game at St. Elizabeth, the Lancaster Bible College women's lacrosse team was still in search of its first victory of the season and based upon both team's records and scores against common opponents, it appeared that the game would be a good one between two even teams.

Boy was it ever.

Trailing 15-11 with 11 minutes to play, the Chargers roared back and tied the game with 38 seconds left to force overtime. After both teams scored in the first overtime, the game went to a sudden death second overtime and the Screaming Eagles converted a free position shot 1:20 into the second overtime to win, 17-16.

In a first half that was sloppy by both squads, the Chargers and Screaming Eagles traded goals back-and-forth for much of the half before St. Elizabeth took a 9-8 lead into halftime.

"It was a weird half because I think we all knew we hadn't played very well, but we only trailed by one at the break, so we were frustrated, but at the same time relieved because we were only down one," Chargers' Head Coach Zach Freeman said.

Akasha Kapp's seventh goal of the season tied the game at 10-10 with 20:46 to play and when Rebekah Weidel tied it at 11-11 with 17:30 to go, it looked as though the Chargers might have enough momentum to pull away. It was the Screaming Eagles that took the momentum however and scored four straight goals in the next 6:18 to take a 15-11 lead.

"We sort of relaxed after we tied it that second time and I'm not sure why," Freeman said. "We hit the post a few times in that stretch, but we need to learn when to step on the gas if we have the momentum."

The Chargers would not go away though and after back-to-back goals by Whitney Heise, the Chargers trailed 15-13 with 7:06 to play. After two defensive stops, Kapp found Ky-Leigh Hallman with a beautiful pass and Hallman cut the Chargers' deficit to one at 15-14 with 3:59 to play.

After another defensive stand, the Chargers took the ball down the field looking to tie the game and with 38 seconds to play, they did just that. After Weidel and Heise switched spots behind the net, Weidel was able to draw two defenders with her to give Heise a lane around the net. Heise came in front and scored between St. Elizabeth goalie Barbara Beresova's legs to knot the game at 15-15.

"Just a great recognition play by Weidel and Heise," Freeman said. "Bekah took defenders with her and Heise's finish was great."

After receiving the ball on a St. Elizabeth foul, LBC's Danielle Good just missed winning the game with one second to play as her shot went just wide.

In the first overtime, Weidel scored for LBC to give the Chargers a 16-15 lead, their first since leading 6-5 in the first half. After the teams switched sides, St. Elizabeth tied the game with 2:29 left and sent the game to a sudden death second overtime.

The Chargers had chances to go down the field at the beginning of the second overtime, but a suddenly stingy Screaming Eagles' defense swarmed the Chargers' ball carriers and after back-to-back fouls in the arc, St. Elizabeth's Meghan Murray scored the game winner 1:20 into the second overtime.

"We played great in the second half and in the overtime periods," Freeman said. "I feel for the ladies, but there isn't anything they should be disappointed with today. We battled and never gave up and they should be proud about that."

Weidel and Heise finished with seven goals each. They become the first pair of LBC teammates with 50 goals each in one season. Heise's 56 goals break her previous school record of 50 set last season.

The Chargers (0-14, 0-8 NEAC) return to action on Saturday when they host Wilson at 1 p.m. LBC will honor its seniors prior to the game, which is LBC's final NEAC game of the season.
