Box Score After a come-from-behind victory in the opening set that sent the LBC crowd into a frenzy, it was hard to fathom an hour later that the Lancaster Bible College women's volleyball team had lost the next three sets and its home opener to Delaware Valley, 3-1.
Trailing for much of the first set, the Chargers battled back to tie the score at 20-20 and eventually took a 24-22 lead to set up to set points. The Aggies fought off one set point, but the Chargers completed the comeback a play later and led 1-0.
Any thoughts of it being an easy match for the Chargers were quickly washed away as Delaware Valley quickly opened up a 9-2 lead on LBC to begin the second set. LBC could never recover and did little offensively during the second set and lost, 25-14.
"We came out flat in the second set and we certainly didn't expect Delaware Valley to come out so strong," Chargers' Head Coach
Lauren Bewley said.
With the match tied 1-1, LBC once again started slow in the third set, while the Aggies jumped out to another quick lead. Try as they may, the Chargers could not string enough points together to make a run, while the Aggies committed just one error in the third set, compared to 11 kills and won, 25-15.
In the fourth set, LBC's hitting percentage improved dramatically, and they led midway through the set, but late errors gave the Aggies a string of points and a lead they would not relinquish as they won the fourth set, 25-18.
LBC sophomore
Lauren Daniels had a match-high 16 kills and added 10 digs, while freshman
Hannah Metzler had 11 kills and 8 digs. Senior
Lauren Heliger added eight kills and 22 digs and freshman
Britany Stout had two kills, five digs and 13 assists.
"I thought Britany stepped in and played well at a position she hasn't practiced a lot at," Bewley said. "I think we are still adjusting some things and we simply need to be more consistent and limit our unforced errors."
The Chargers (0-4) return to the court on Saturday when they play a tri-match at Messiah. LBC will take on the host Falcons at 10 a.m. and Haverford at 12:30 p.m.
Notes:
-LBC women's soccer player Monica Horning's sister, Destinee Horning, led Delaware Valley with 12 kills and 19 digs.
-The Chargers fall to 2-7 all-time against Delaware Valley.
