Chargers Drop Three in D.C.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 The Lancaster Bible women's volleyball team took part in the 14th annual Catholic University Guetle Invitational on Saturday in Washington, D.C. The Chargers, playing with a short bench because of multiple retreats taking place at LBC this weekend, dropped all three matches.

In the opening match, LBC lost to Washington [Md.], 3-0. The Shorewomen defeated the Chargers, 25-21, 25-17, 25-16. Lauren Heliger had 11 kills and 17 digs to lead LBC, while Lauren Daniels added 11 kills of her own. The Chargers had two more team digs, (52-50) than Washington did, but the Shorewomen had 10 more kills and 10 more aces than the Chargers.

In the second match, the Chargers fell to the host Cardinals, 3-0. Catholic won, 25-16, 25-16, 25-13.

"We obviously didn't play very well in the first two matches," Chargers' Head Coach Lauren Bewley said. "But we did play much better in the third match and I thought our team play was great."

The third match saw the Chargers battle back from two sets down for the second time this season, as they fought back to tie Ohio Christian, after the Trailblazers jumped out to a 2-0 lead. After losing a tough second set, 28-26, the Chargers won the third set 25-21 and crushed Ohio Christian, 25-8 in the fourth to set up a fifth and deciding set.

Like Thursday night against Alvernia, the Chargers came up just short and lost, 15-10. It was the third five-set match of the season for LBC, after not playing any last year. Unfortunately, LBC is 0-3 in five-setters so far this season.

Despite the loss, during the third match, Heliger recorded the 1,000th kill of her career. She is the first men's or women's volleyball player in school history with 1,000 kills.

The Chargers (1-11) are back in action on Tuesday when they host Baptist Bible at 7 p.m. After Tuesday, LBC will play its next 11 games away from Horst Athletic Center and doesn't play at home again until October 11 when they host Lycoming.
